Free Lead Testing & Abatement In Tucson!

Photo of a lead sampleLead.  We all know it is a hazard, but dealing with it can be expensive.  In many areas, the homes most likely to have lead problems can also be the ones rented or purchased by people of modest means.

Problem - what can someone of limited income do if they are concerned about lead in their home?  Moving would be an option, but what if it isn't an affordable option?  Are they stuck with the problem?

  Not In Tucson!

City of Tucson LogoI met Scott Wilson today, Residential Rehabilitation Project Coordinator in the Community Services Dept. of the City of Tucson.  He told me about the Lead Hazard Control Program that the city is embarking on as part of a HUD campaign to eliminate lead as a hazard to children by 2010.

What qualifies?

Check out the Southwest Fair Housing Blog for parameters and more info.  A PDF fact sheet is available online, too:  Tucson Lead Hazard Control Program

In 4-plexes & smaller, if only 1 unit is found to have lead-based pain, all 4 units will qualify for free abatement.

In larger "plexes" free abatement (lead paint hazard removal) will apply if over 50% of the units are income eligible.  Under 50% eligibility and special circumstances will apply--call for more info.

This service is subject to funding availability, and there are a few more considerations for property owners to participate.  For more information, or to apply for the program, please call Scott Wilson at 520.837.5318 or Karla Timmons at 520.837.5330

Scott and his team are really excited at the opportunity that this program presents to finally deal with eliminating a problem that we've all known about for over 30 years.  It is easy to see why he is in charge of this project, as his enthusiasm rubs off on everyone he meets!
