Snow On The Mountains + Sunny Skies & Palm Trees = Beauty In Tucson

On Sunday I was really excited to see snow on the Catalina Mountains that are the northern landmark of Tucson.  Few people outside the area know that Tucson's elevation is roughly around 2400 ft above sea level.  Mt. Lemmon, the peak of the Santa Catalina Mountain range, is over 9100 ft, which is over a mile difference! (The ski area is open today, by the way)

You've heard of Denver being the "Mile High City"?  Well, we've got more than a mile of variable elevation...which lends itself to an amazing difference in terrain, vegetation...and activities, all within a short drive.

Here's a photo I took earlier this afternoon, showing a little of that variety (and more snow on the mountains than on Sunday).  No, I didn't wear shorts today...but thought about it.

I took this shot just north of Wilmot & Broadway - on Tucson's East side.  Yes, I did look both ways before going out to the median.

What A Saguaro Looks Like After 150-175 Years

Saguaro cactus after it is dead

"Saguaro Gone By"

After seeing some of the responses to a photo I posted of a cabinet door using saguaro ribs as a decorative insert, I thought I should look through my photo files to show everyone what a saguaro cactus looks like when it has passed on.  These incredible succulents live 150-175 years, and are mostly made up of water.

When saguaros die, they leave quite an impressive skeleton behind--after all, these things weigh TONS when alive.  Many times, the skeletons fall to the ground after a strong wind, but this one has not (probably due to the rebar someone used to anchor it that isn't visible here).  I found this one in the Hayhook Ranch area, west of Tucson close to 3 Points--just off of the road to Arivaca.  There are some nice acreages available out in this area.

Still standing its post as the sentinel of the desert, the mighty saguaro lives on after death.

Where do saguaros go when they die?  They become decorative accents when the right people find them, that's where! Tucson artists, residents, decorators and craftsmen of all manner find the skeleton useful & interesting to work with.

The mighty saguaro cactus of the Sonoran Desert leaves a skeleton behind when its long life is past.  They are used for fencing, lattice work, ceilings, cabinets, left in place as an interesting reminder that nothing is permanent (but gets interesting even after passing on), chair backs, you name it, those saguaro ribs serve a lot of uses!

Tucson Sunset - La Cebadilla Neighborhood

January sunset looking southwest from Avenida Sorgo in NE Tucson

Last week, one of the agents in my office asked me to shoot some photos for a new listing of hers.  After doing some shots in the late afternoon sun, I stayed on the property as the sun set... man I love what desert beauty just falls in front of us here in the Tucson area.

This location is only about 10 minutes from town, in the La Cebadilla neighborhood.
